13/02/21 Farming Today This Week: Pigs getting too fat, shellfish in trouble, animal welfare, lambing diary
We cover it all in this programme, birth, death and overweight pigs.
British pigs are getting too fat, and that’s not a good thing. Export delays caused by Brexit and staff shortages due to Covid mean pig farmers are struggling to get their animals into the food chain.
This week a £23 million government fund designed to help fishing crews and seafood producers caught up in export issues opened, but many of those involved say they don’t qualify for this money.
A government report has made recommendations for improving animal welfare at slaughter. They came in a review of rules on killing animals, though animal welfare groups say they don’t go far enough.
We hear from farmers early lambing in Shropshire, as they help a ewe delivering triplets.
Presented by Charlotte Smith and produced by Beatrice Fenton.
