An announcement is expected imminently on the details of the Government’s Taskforce to tackle the ongoing problems for fish and shellfish exporters. As we reported this Taskforce was announced a couple of weeks ago in response to demand from Scottish producers who say that since Brexit, arguments over the interpretation of rules, delays at ports and reams of paperwork have brought their businesses to a standstill. We find out what fishers wan to hear.

Meanwhile, there’s a plan to re-brand some of the fish caught in Cornwall in an attempt to sell what would usually be exported, to UK customers. Plenty of megrim sole and spider crabs are caught off the Cornish coast, but the majority are exported to the EU. Now, the Cornish Fish Producers' Organisation hopes re-branding them as Cornish Sole and Cornish King Crabs respectively will temp UK customers to try them.

And a Government review of the rules around protecting animal welfare during slaughter has called for more research into the way pigs are killed and into ways of stunning poultry. It also calls for improved regulation of slaughter where stunning isn’t used for religious reasons.
