Robert Burns the Musician

Bruce explores Burns' lesser known history as a folk musician with music from Emily Smith, insight from Dr Fred Freeman & Alistair McCulloch on playing Burns' 270 year old fiddle.

Everyone knows "Robert Burns the Poet" but what about "Burns the Folk Musician"? Bruce explores Burns' often overlooked history as a folk musician, early ethno-musicologist and prolific national song-writer.

Emily Smith joins Bruce live with some specially recorded songs and we hear from Alistair McCulloch, the only person permitted to play the Gregg Violin - a 270 year old fiddle thought to have been played by Burns himself. Plus Dr Fred Freeman, who recorded the monumental 12 volume collection, "The Complete Songs of Robert Burns", uncovers the influence of the Border Pipes on Burns' song.
