From Lewis to Limerick

Gary West pays tribute to one of the finest pipers of his generation, Pipe Major Iain Morrison. Plus music from Louise Malcahy & Murray Henderson performs our Pibroch Of The Day.

Gary West pays tribute to one of the finest highland pipers of his generation , Pipe Major Iain Morrison, who passed away recently. Morrison was born and raised on the Isle of Lewis, he was a member of the Queen’s Own Highlanders and winner of the Gold Medal at the Northern Meeting in 1969. Morrison also set up an annual piping contest which brings the world’s top players to his native island of Lewis each year. Also on the show we have a lively set of tunes from the Field Marshall Montgomery Band recorded in concert at Motherwell’s Civic Centre. Plus we feature the sound of the uillean pipes in the hands of one of Ireland’s leading young players Louise Malcahy and our Pibroch Of The Day is performed by New Zealand born piper Murray Henderson.
