Good morning. January is normally the big month for gym memberships to be taken up, and for sign-ups聽 to programmes of weight loss, exercise and diets. I hugely admire the zeal and energy of people who do this 鈥� and if you are listening to me while pulling on your lycra, ready for another session on the exercise bike this morning, go for it and all power to your elbow.
The human body is of course much more than a mechanical device, although it includes remarkable structures of strength and precision, and has the extraordinary ability to heal itself after injury or illness. Small wonder then, that the Bible writers used it as an illustration of the Church. The Church is one body, but has many different parts. So it is with us 鈥� diverse in ethnicity, wealth, gender, abilities, and every other arbiter of difference, but united in Christ. 鈥淵ou are the Body of Christ 鈥� and individually members of it鈥�, said Paul to the very divided and conflicted church in Corinth. 鈥淐hrist is the head of the church, his body and is himself its Saviour鈥�.聽
A fitness trainer whom I know (I can鈥檛 in all honesty say that I am his client) explains that his business has been radically changed with the current pandemic restrictions 鈥� but that he is still able to meet with his classes online. 鈥淚 don鈥檛 need to be in the room to motivate them to keep going. It鈥檚 all in your head鈥�, he told me. 鈥淕et your head right, and the body will look after itself鈥�. Yes indeed.聽
Lord, we thank you that you are the head of the Body and that you have called us as the members of your body - to act in concert with the head. Amen.
