Travel, Employment, Benefits & Consumer Law

The travel industries’ annus horribilis, a welfare system under strain and Covid consumer rights with Jimmy Hughes.

A reflection on the year of 2020 for consumers.

It has been a year of travel chaos, from cancelled flights to quarantine. Travel editor of the Independent Simon Calder, travel agent Sandra Corkin and Paul Hatty of BIBA discuss the importance of travel insurance and the lessons we have learnt.

2020 has also seen a year of change for working environments; Mark McAllister of the Labour Relations Agency tells Linda how we may never revert to old working patterns, and how employers and employees will have to adapt.

Dr Ciara Fitzpatrick discusses how the pandemic has had an impact on the use of the benefit system.

Resident consumer guru Jimmy Hughes looks back on the effect the pandemic has had on consumer rights, queries, purchases and Christmas presents.

And, day care centres and social enterprises were shut down in March, families and carers were suddenly left without respite and support. Three local-based charities here are taking part in a UK-wide study of the lives of people with learning disabilities throughout the coronavirus pandemic and their families. Linda hears the story of two people who have been affected in this way, and chats to Agnes Lunny, chief executive of Positive Futures, about the support they have provided.
