Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Sarah Joseph, Editor of a Muslim lifestyle magazine:

Μύ

Even though we are a Muslim family, we would celebrate Christmas every year for my (Christian) Mum.

Μύ

She would stay with us and we would have a big tree, a full Christmas dinner, presents – the lot.

Μύ

Never one to do anything too early, about now I would normally be popping to the shops to buy her her favourite perfume, the extra special foaming bath wash that she liked so much, as well as a new nighty and dressing gown, and a couple of pairs of super thick socks. I always bought the same things as Mum always needed them, and they would last about a year. I’d obviously try to think of some other personal presents to get her too – a nice shawl, a pair of earrings, a framed photo.

Μύ

This year though – I can’t buy her anything. Like so many other families who have lost a loved one in 2020, there is a name missing from the Christmas list. There will be a space at the Christmas table.

Μύ

I am reliably told that this gets easier. At the moment, I remain to be convinced!

Μύ

If the grief of losing Mum has taught me nothing else this year, it’s that unless we want to spend our time feeling regretful, then we have to put what is truly important first.

Μύ

What we say we care about and what we actually act upon are often two completely different things.

Μύ

When people are asked β€œwhat are the most important things for you?”, the most common answer is personal relationships.

Μύ

And yet, in our complex, busy world, there is often a disconnect between what we say is important and what we actually do with our time.

Μύ

Mum and I spoke everyday and I would try to prioritise her needs. But I still feel I could have done better. I certainly wish I could have spent more time with her, and provided more fully for her.

Μύ

So my recommendation for the New Year – make a resolution to put the people you love first.

Μύ

Put them above the social media scrolling, the TV, watching the News.

Μύ

Of course there are always tensions and competing demands forΜύour attention,Μύbut I reckon consciously spending time with the people we love is a good use of our precious time on Earth.
