Supermarket Deliveries, Christmas Ads, Garden Centres Online

Problems getting food delivery slots for Christmas and how covid-19 changed festive TV ads this year.

If you've struggled to secure a delivery slot for your Christmas food shop, you're not alone. It can be especially worrying if you're currently isolating at home. Many of the big supermarkets have released their delivery slots for the festive period, but customers have reported waiting up until late or night or early in the morning without being able to secure one. Some supermarkets have suspended regular deliveries for vulnerable customers over Christmas because demand is so high.
Retailers spend a lot of money on their big Christmas TV ads, but this year has been a challenge. Work on festive advertisements normally starts in the Spring, but the pandemic resulted in uncertainty around what this Christmas would be like. We look at how television adverts are different this year.
Traditionally garden centres don't have much of an online presence - they focus on being destinations for a day out. When they had to close in March this year, many had to quickly develop an online store. We talk about the importance of online sales for garden centres - do they stop people visiting in person, or are they a great way to bring in new custom?
