Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

My wife and I recently celebrated our wedding anniversary.

I’ve officially been punching above my weight for 16 years now.

Ever since our tremendous kiss in my rusty Ford Fiesta, I’ve been smitten.

Properly loved up.

Certain that Anna was the woman for me.

She took a bit more convincing, mind you.

Always worrying that we were too different.

That her naturally quiet and calm demeanour and well-ordered life would descend into loud and messy chaos.

It was a fair prediction.

But eventually my relentless wooing paid off and she said ‘yes’.

Between mouthfuls of candlelit curry, we spent our anniversary night reminiscing about the eventful wedding day.

Remembered the mournful way my father-in-law walked Anna down the aisle.

I had to virtually prise her off him.

And my embarrassing mum interrupting the brutal best man speech.

‘Is anyone going to say anything nice about my son?!’

Then there was the vicar’s sermon.

We’ve never forgotten it.

Taking an interesting twist on the Bible story when Jesus turned water into wine at a wedding, the vicar said we had a choice to make in our lives.

‘Do you want to be like water - or wine?’

His point being, what kind of life will we strive for.

One flowing with richness, colour and depth - or settling for a safer, blander, less fruitful existence?

I read once that ‘the main business of the Christian life is to go through the world turning its water into wine.’

In other words, to always seek transformation.

To see God’s love as fermented with hope and joy. Generosity and compassion.

And to share it around liberally in whatever way I can.

I find it helpful to drink in the inspiration of wine-type people.

Like Julie and John - a beautiful couple I’ve got to know in the parish recently.

They’ve built a community food hut in their front drive to help struggling families.

Those with plenty donate supplies, so that those without enough can freely collect them without judgement or shame.

The hut has created a little water into wine movement locally.

An outpouring of kind-heartedness and shared purpose.

Julie and John’s hut has never once lacked anything.

As for our married life, Zoe, we’re still striving to live days like full-bodied Claret.

I’m hoping this 17th year will be a vintage!
