Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From comedian & writer Paul Kerensa:
From Zo毛 Ball to Bobby Ball... This week, funnyman Bobby was laid to rest. His procession paused at Blackpool鈥檚 Comedy Carpet. I know a few comedians gathered there, apart, to pay respects. I鈥檇 have been there myself if I could. Just two months ago, I was writing for Bobby, for the sitcom Not Going Out. For 11 years, we鈥檝e both been part of that sitcom family 鈥 him on-screen as Lee Mack鈥檚 dad, me off-screen as one of Lee Mack鈥檚 additional material minions. It was a pinch-yourself moment when I got to write for the comedy legend I鈥檇 grown up watching, who with Tommy Cannon, brought comic chaos to 1980s television.听
It鈥檚 been joyous to watch Bobby at the studios filming Not Going Out 鈥 so naturally funny, he鈥檇 find laughs in lines we never knew were there. I found it even more joyous to watch it go out on TV 鈥 I was like a child once more, watching this star deliver joy time and time again. At the height of Cannon and Ball鈥檚 powers in the 80s, Bobby became a Christian, after a chat with a theatre chaplain. Bobby was successful, but wasn鈥檛 happy. To that chaplain, Bobby said he: 鈥減oured out all the hurt, fear and guilt that had loaded me down for so long.鈥 Bobby used to say: 鈥淵ou can鈥檛 worry if you鈥檙e laughing.鈥澨
He鈥檚 caused a lot of laughter, kept a lot of worry at bay. The most memorable Bobby moment for me was aptly at a church, filming the Wedding episode of Not Going Out, I had a cameo as a guest, Tommy Cannon had a cameo as the vicar. During a break in filming, I saw Tommy and Bobby, just like old times, sitting on a bench outside the church, just catching up with each other, watching the world go by, and above all, having a laugh. So marvellous to see these stars I鈥檇 grown up watching, have a genuine moment of joy together. I think Bobby Ball was a true comedy missionary 鈥 sent to lighten our lives, and remind us to lighten the lives of others鈥 Take a bow, Bobby. The laughter you鈥檝e started keeps on echoing. Rock on...
