Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From comedian & writer Paul Kerensa:
It鈥檚 been inspiring to see 鈥 and more importantly hear 鈥 Paul Harvey: an ex-music teacher with dementia, recently prompted by his son with just four notes: F natural, A, D, B. From that, he improvised a piano composition, that鈥檚 quite beautiful. Broadcast on Radio 4鈥檚 Broadcasting House, Good Morning Britain, CBS, then backed by the 麻豆约拍 Philharmonic, released as a single, it鈥檚 topped the charts, inspiring a million-pound donation to dementia charities. To hear Paul play, it鈥檚 fuel for the soul. The way he takes the notes he鈥檚 given and turns them into heartbreaking, no... heartmending, joyous music.听
Take away the orchestra, the number one single, the big donation... and the magic is in that original performance, where Paul creates something wonderful, seemingly from nothing. It鈥檚 like he鈥檚 tapped the ground, struck a spring of water, and the notes flow from there. In the film August Rush, Robin Williams played a musician, who says: 鈥淢usic is God's little reminder that there's something else besides us in this universe, a harmonic connection between all living beings, everywhere, even the stars.鈥 Maybe. When you hear Paul play, music certainly seems to be a key, unlocking something deep inside of us. Our hearts have beats. Our musical wells are deep. We return to music, even in 鈥 especially in 鈥 times of crisis. This year I鈥檝e re-explored my old uplifting favourites. Spare a thought for Radiohead 鈥 no one鈥檚 playing much of them this year. In the Bible there鈥檚 lots of musical prayer in the middle of hardship.听
When the Hebrews are uprooted, their lives upturned, that鈥檚 when they sing Psalms, like: 鈥淢ake music to the Lord with the harp, with singing, with trumpets, with the blast of a ram鈥檚 horn.鈥 Basically whatever鈥檚 handy. Sing, play, whatever鈥檚 going on around us, or within us. Paul Harvey鈥檚 performance is bittersweet. He鈥檚 robbed of his memories. But oddly, his music has brought people back from those memories. Hundreds of pupils Paul鈥檚 inspired have now got in touch, saying how much he influenced their lives. How welcome. How needed. So while Paul鈥檚 music tells a great story about himself, it goes far beyond him, connecting others from his past, and inspiring the rest of us. Encouraging, heartening... I think that what started with four notes, has an influence that鈥檚 endless.
