Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Downstairs in the basement of my Mum鈥檚 block of flats she had three store cupboards.

In the last cupboard we opened there were four large brown boxes with my name on them. They were full of my school books, notebooks, paintings, poems, and letters from the age of 5.She had trapsed these boxes from house-move to house-move. Some of the stuff would have traversed seven moves!聽I couldn鈥檛 believe she had kept it all!

The amount of work I churned out amazed me. Goodness knows 鈥 I must have been a diligent and prodigious student! But what truly hit me was how the boxes showed that the things I care about today have been important to me my whole life.

School books were adorned with anti-apartheid stickers, peace symbols, and the like.

She鈥檇 kept my O鈥橪evel history project entitled, 鈥淧eace in The Nuclear Age鈥. It contained my work diaries for the project. At a time when there was no internet or email, my 14 year old self had written to people all over the world about my desire for building peace. She had kept copies of my letters to the then Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher. My 12 year old self had written to her multiple times. Mum had kept the replies from 10 Downing Street.聽I was writing about the environment aged 14 鈥 including voicing fears about the destruction of the Amazon Rain Forest, AND the British country side! I was amazed to read I was championing the benefits of hedgerows in 1985!聽She鈥檇 also kept all my school reports, and my school prizes. I鈥檇 won the religion prize. My annotated Bible, prayer books, and writings, point to a very religious child.

These boxes were her providing me with proof of my essence. Proof of self. And as The Prophet said, 鈥淜now thyself, know thy Lord.鈥滻ndeed, I reckon knowing our essential selves is a way for greater contentment.聽Certainly for me, the boxes came at a time when I have been wondering at the purpose of my life in a chaotic and complex world.聽The Muslim scholar, poet and mystic, Rumi wrote - 鈥淭he wealth within you, your essence, is your kingdom.鈥澛燭he boxes were like a gift from Mum reminding me of my essence 鈥 giving me my kingdom, and reminding me never to give up, but rather to be who I truly am.
