Running with Grief
One year on from the death of her dad, Radio 1's Clara Amfo explores the impact of losing a parent.
In March 2015 Clara Amfo was in Paris, about to run the Paris half marathon, when she received a phone call to tell her that her father had died suddenly. She came straight home and was plunged into the chaos and emotional turmoil of bereavement: a turmoil that she had to hide from the millions of listeners to her new morning show on Radio 1.
As the anniversary of her father's death approaches, Clara explores the impact of losing a parent, on herself and others. Over 24,000 children are bereaved of a parent each year in Britain, yet it's a subject we are notoriously bad at dealing with and talking about.
Clara will talk through the first year without her dad with brutal honesty, the highs and lows, as well as setting out to meet other young people who've lost a parent to find out how it's affected their lives and what they wish others had and hadn't said to them.
Alongside all this, Clara decides to re-train for the Paris half-marathon, taking place the day before the anniversary of her dad's death. Will she finish unfinished business? And will re-training and completing the marathon she never got to run before give her something positive to take away from the most difficult year of her life?
