Embracing Winter

Mark Stephen and Euan McIlwraith try to embrace winter and come up with ways to enjoy spending more time outside over the next few months.

As the clocks change this weekend and we get ever closer to winter, have we been approaching the dark days with the wrong mindset? This week we try to embrace winter and come up with ways to enjoy spending more time outside over the next few months.

Our ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Scotland colleague Anna Miles and husband Matt Brennan try their hand at leaf spotting in Kelvingrove Park with mixed results!

Lucy Anderson is a dedicated sea swimmer even during the colder months. She tells us what she finds so invigorating about taking a dip in the briny.

ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ favourite Autumnwatch returns to our screens next week with presenter Michaela Strachan based at the Tentsmuir National Nature Reserve in Fife. Mark went to meet her to find out more about this series.

Mark speaks to writer and broadcaster Lesley Riddoch about how our attitudes towards winter in Scotland differ from those of Scandinavian countries. This year in particular with the Covid-19 pandemic, do we need to just embrace doing more socialising outdoors?

We look back at Mark and Euan’s 2016 trip to Norway where they enjoyed a communal hytte walk.

And sticking with Norway, we speak live to Siri Meland from outdoor organisation Norsk Friluftsliv about the term friluftsliv which translates literally as β€œfree air life” and what it means for enjoying winter.

Euan delves into folklore once again as he tells us all about Beira, Scottish goddess of winter.

The colder days have brought some unwelcome visitors into Mark’s home- mice. And while he feels sympathy for their plight, his kitchen cupboards are not where he’d like them to stay.

With ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Autumnwatch making its home at Tentsmuir National Nature Reserve from next week, Mark finds out more about Tentsmuir and what people can see there from reserve manager Marijke Leith.

And of course, there’s mystery bird. What has Euan got in store for us this week and can you identify it?
