Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
Writer and Musician, Jahnavi Harrison:
It’s been a few weeks since my sister gave birth to her new one, and she’s getting pretty eased in now to being a mother of two.  I’ve looked after my 2 year old nephew a fair amount over that time — probably the most time I’ve spent with a two year old in the last 20 years! It’s a pretty fascinating time of development – meaning, sometimes you want to pull your hair out… but – there’s so much going on at once! One of the many things I’ve been struck by is his appetite for listening to stories.
My sister isn’t keen on him having screentime at this point, unless all hell is breaking loose, so at all other times – it’s audio alone that he gets. If I put on an audiobook for kids, he’ll sit completely still and focused, and can listen for more than an hour. And he’ll remember words and phrases – he memorises chunks of Peppa and the Mr Men, and repeats them over and over while he’s playing. This is his time for acquiring language at an incredible rate, so I know it’s to be expected… but watching him has reminded me of how much I’ve lost that skill of listening without doodling, ironing, cooking or driving. It also made me wonder how well I listen in conversation, then - if that’s the quality of my attention.
Within the Hindu tradition, listening or sravanam is rated as the most important of all activities. And not just listening, but hearing – digesting the sound and meaning and letting it shape my life. Sound influences thoughts, which lead to actions and choices, which add up, day by day, to make a life. So what I listen to is as important to my health and wellbeing as what I eat. I do want to flex those hearing muscles a bit, inspired by my nephew, so recently if I’m talking to a friend, or especially listening to something I can learn from, I’m trying be more conscious of when my attention wanders and to try to refocus it. I’m also trying to digest what I’ve heard by remembering things later on…though these days… there’s a lot of Peppa Pig in there too!
