Island Dreaming and the St Cuthbert's Way
Join Helen Needham and Mark Stephen as they dream about islands and Mark and Euan embark upon a pilgrimage by bicycle closely following St Cuthbert's Way.
In the first half hour Mark Stephen and Helen Needham chat to the author Gavin Francis about the appeal of islands. Gavin works as a medical doctor as well as a writer and has travelled widely on all seven continents.
In his latest book, Island Dreams, Gavin examines our collective fascination with islands. He blends stories of his own travels with psychology, philosophy and great voyages from literature, shedding new light on the importance of islands and isolation in our collective consciousness.
After 7 o’clock, Mark Stephen and Euan McIlwraith follow a very ancient tradition by making a pilgrimage, but, with a modern twist. They follow the route of St Cuthbert's Way as closely as they can by bicycle, making their way from Melrose to Holy Island.
The final challenge is for Mark and Euan to make it over to Holy Island and back before the sea covers the causeway at high tide.
