PopMaster plus Don Black's Tracks Of My Years
Ken's got another round of PopMaster, plus Don Black, the legendary lyricist who presents his final Radio 2 show on Sunday night, chooses All New Tracks of My Years.
Don Black, the legendary lyricist who presents his final Radio 2 show on Sunday night, chooses All New Tracks of My Years. Don has worked extensively in the theatre and film industry, and has previously collaborated with Andrew Lloyd Webber on Tell Me On A Sunday, Aspects of Love, Sunset Boulevard and Stephen Ward, the latter two also with Christopher Hampton.
His other theatre credits include Billy, Bar Mitzvah Boy, Bombay Dreams, Dracula the Musical and Bonnie and Clyde. Don has also contributed songs to many films including Born Free, The Italian Job, Dances With Wolves, Out of Africa, True Grit, To Sir, With Love and five James Bond films. As well as Lord Lloyd Webber, he has previously collaborated with John Barry, Quincy Jones, Jule Styne, Henry Mancini, Michel Legrand and Marvin Hamlish amongst others. His work has received numerous awards internationally, in 2007 he was inducted into the Songwriterβs Hall of Fame and in 1999 he was awarded the OBE. He is also the recipient of an Oscar, two Tonys, a Golden Globe and five Ivor Novello Awards.
Earlier in the year Don released his memoir 'The Sanest Guy in the Room' . The book reveals the essence of Don's craft and his own personal milestones, looks at those who have inspired him and tries to convey what made those icons tick. It is also a poignant love letter to Donβs late wife, Shirley; the person with whom he shared his life for over sixty years. The next two tracks he's chosen come from The Beatles and Tom Jones.
Ken's also got the daily love song and another round of the legendary PopMaster music quiz. There's also the record and album of the week. If you want to contact the show, just email - ken.bruce@bbc.co.uk
