Pause For Thought
I’m speaking from New York and it is just after 4am, which is not an unusual time to be awake since my sister gave birth to her second child a week ago! I’m here to be the resident house elf for a time, while they get adjusted and settled in with their new baby boy! He is…well, what everyone says about newborn babies. Perfect. Peachy fuzz little head and rosebud cheeks, sweet, soft and milky, each fingernail and eyelash is a talking point! It’s been a couple years since I’ve spent so much time with a newborn. Holding such a vulnerable little thing in the crook of my arm, watching him breathing as he sleeps… I’ve been thinking about vulnerability, ya know… as I wash dishes and fold stacks of laundry! Independence has always had a pull for me.Ìý
Even the word ‘dependent’ carries a wet blanket heaviness. Independence, on the other hand, sounds like a soaring bird. Ah, cliched I know but – that’s me. But my sister, a real toughie and a midwife herself, gripped my hand and leaned on me throughout her labour. She depended on the birth centre team to guide her baby safely out in that moment of absolute vulnerability. And while baby depends on her, she depends on a forest of loving hands to cook, clean and care for her post birth. The domestic ecosystem has adjusted to accommodate everyone’s needs and it’s a beautiful thing, though a delicate balance! I guess to depend is to be ok with not being in control of everything; to not be good at everything. It’s funny how independence can seem so real and alluring on a surface level, yet I’m humbled to be reminded of how dependent I really am.Ìý
I do need:Ìý air, sunlight, water, food, shelter, the changing of the seasons. My heart depends on love. At the deepest level of spirit, I depend on the divine – I know him as Krishna - from whom all these things and more are flowing incessantly. Acknowledging the presence of grace in my life helps to be grateful for the smallest of things which is pretty powerful in itself.
