Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Guvna B, rapper and author:
I’m passionate about young people finding their faith and having someone to believe in them. I see my role, both through my words and music, as being like an older brother to young people as they forge their path into adulthood. Though parents mostly try their best, some can be absent or struggle to relate, and so older siblings, being just that bit further ahead in their own journey, have the benefit of both foresight and hindsight: they know the world their younger siblings inhabit, and chances are they have been through the same experiences and discovered what works for them.
When I think about Martin Luther King, I didn’t know him personally but I look at him as if he was my big bro. Big brother’s can’t take away the pain you’ll likely go through in life, but they can fight a few battles on your behalf, and live a life of vulnerability and passion for you to learn from. Martin Luther King ran an incredible lap on his part of the relay and now the batton has ended up with you, with me, with us. A lot of my work involves going into schools and youth clubs, talking to young people about my life and experiences – trying to encourage a positive narrative. I imagine that the stories I tell are not that different from the stories they hear from their teachers every day of the school year. But to many of the young people, it’s tough for them to be themselves if they can’t see themselves, and so relatable people they can hear from can be a big help– I’m not a lawyer or doctor dressed in a suit or a white coat; I’m just a rapper and that can sometimes make me feel unqualified.
When imposter syndrome runs riot in my mind, I need to remind myself that misconceptions, doubts, and stereotypes don’t define me. I need to dig deep and use the my faith in God, and the infectious strength that people like Martin Luther King had, to make a difference. So today is I have a Dream day and I dream that when I wake up, I never lose sight of the difference I can make by simply by being there when someone needs me, or saying the right words to set them on their path.
