Litir 1099: Briathrachas Fhuaimean (1)

Dè am fuaim a bhios luchag a’ dèanamh? Am bi i a’ beucaich no a’ comhartaich? No am bi i a’ ³¦°ùò²Ô²¹²Ô, no a’ donnalaich? A bheil e gu diofar ma tha an luchag toilichte seach mì-thoilichte? No misneachail an àite eagallach? Uill, feumaidh mi aideachadh nach eil mi ro eòlach air cainnt nan luchag. Ach faodaidh mi a ràdh, an ìre mhath le cinnt, nach bi luchag a’ beucaich no a’ comhartaich!

A bheil sibh eòlach air a’ bhriathrachas co-cheangailte ri fuaim? Anns an Litir seo, tha mi a’ dol a dh’innse feadhainn dhiubh dhuibh. Anns a’ chiad dol a-mach, chanamaid ²úì´Ç²µ²¹¾±±ô no ²úì»å¾±±ô ris an fhuaim a bhios luchag a’ dèanamh – squeaking no chirping ann am Beurla. Bidh eòin bheaga a’ ²úì´Ç²µ²¹¾±±ô cuideachd.

Dè th’ ann am beucaich, ma-thà? Ann am Beurla, canaidh sinn roaring no bellowing ris. ʼS e beucaich am fuaim a nì a’ mhuir air latha stoirmeil – beucaich na mara. Nam biodh sibh a’ tighinn car faisg air eas mòr mòr, mar Eas Niagara no Eas Bhictòria, bhiodh sibh a’ cluinntinn beucaich an easa. Ge-tà, bidh sinn cuideachd ag ràdh ‘beucaich’ ris an fhuaim a bhios boc-earba a’ dèanamh.

Agus comhartaich? ʼS e sin am fuaim a nì cù, seach luchag. Agus ³¦°ùò²Ô²¹²Ô? Uill, seo agaibh pìos bàrdachd anns a bheil am facal: seillein riabhacha, breaca, srianach, len ³¦°ùò²Ô²¹²Ô cianail as fiadhta srann ‘brindled, speckled, striped bees, with their mournful droning of the wildest buzz’. Tha seo às an dàn Coire a’ Cheathaich le Donnchadh Bàn Mac an t-Saoir. Seillein riabhacha, breaca, srianach, len ³¦°ùò²Ô²¹²Ô cianail as fiadhta srann.

Tha ³¦°ùò²Ô²¹²Ô a’ ciallachadh ‘the buzzing of a fly or bee’. Tha e cuideachd a’ ciallachadh fuaim a nì allt – ‘purling’ ann am Beurla. Cha bhi luchag a’ dèanamh ³¦°ùò²Ô²¹²Ô fhad ʼs as aithne dhomh. Ach nan cluinneadh luchag ³¦°ùò²Ô²¹²Ô, ʼs dòcha gum biodh i a’ gabhail eagail. Carson? Uill, ʼs e sin am fuaim a nì cat nuair a tha e toilichte. Crònan cait ‘the purring of a cat’. Tha seanfhacal ann: ʼS ann air a shon fhèin a nì an cat ³¦°ùò²Ô²¹²Ô ‘it’s for itself the cat purrs. ʼS ann air a shon fhèin a nì an cat ³¦°ùò²Ô²¹²Ô.

Tha »åù°ù»å²¹²Ô cuideachd a’ seasamh airson purring. Seo seanfhacal eile: Nuair a bhios nì aig a’ chat, nì e »åù°ù»å²¹²Ô ‘when the cat has got hold of something, it purrs’. Bidh sinn ag ràdh sin mu dhaoine beartach a bhios a’ bruidhinn gu tric mun cuid ionmhais. Nuair a bhios nì aig a’ chat, nì e »åù°ù»å²¹²Ô.

Dè mu dheidhinn donnal no donnalaich? ʼS e sin am fuaim àrd a bhios cù a’ dèanamh nuair a tha e ann am pian. Howling. Bidh madaidhean-allaidh a’ donnalaich gu nàdarrach.

Agus dè chanas sinn ris an fhuaim mhòr a bhios daimh a’ dèanamh? ʼS e sin langanaich. Lowing, bellowing. Langanaich. Aig àm na dàra, canaidh sinn ²úù¾±°ù¾±³¦³ó ris. Bùirich – loud bellowing. Dè am beathach eile, a bharrachd air damh, a bhios a’ ²úù¾±°ù¾±³¦³ó? Chanainn fhèin – tarbh. Mar sin leibh an-dràsta.

Faclan na Litreach

Faclan na Litreach: beucaich na mara: the roar [thunder] of the sea; boc earba: roebuck; Donnchadh Bàn Mac an t-Saoir: Duncan Ban MacIntyre; langanaich: lowing, bellowing.

Abairtean na Litreach

Abairtean na Litreach: Dè am fuaim a bhios luchag a’ dèanamh?: what sound does a [little] mouse make?; a bheil e gu diofar ma tha an luchag toilichte seach mì-thoilichte?: does it make a difference if the mouse is happy or unhappy?; no misneachail an àite eagallach?: or confident instead of fearful?; feumaidh mi aideachadh nach eil mi ro eòlach air cainnt nan luchag: I must admit that I’m not too familiar with the speech of [the] mice; faodaidh mi a ràdh, an ìre mhath le cinnt: I can say, pretty much with certainty; nach bi luchag a’ beucaich no a’ comhartaich: that a mouse doesn’t roar or bark; bidh eòin bheaga a’ ²úì´Ç²µ²¹¾±±ô: little birds chirp; nan cluinneadh luchag ³¦°ùò²Ô²¹²Ô, ʼs dòcha gum biodh i a’ gabhail eagail: if a mouse heard purring, perhaps it would become scared; bidh sinn ag ràdh sin mu dhaoine beartach a bhios a’ bruidhinn gu tric mun cuid ionmhais: we say that about rich people who often talk about their riches; nuair a tha e ann am pian: when it is in pain; dè chanas sinn ris an fhuaim mhòr a bhios daimh a’ dèanamh?: what do we call the great noise that stags make?; aig àm na dàra, canaidh sinn ²úù¾±°ù¾±³¦³ó ris: at the time of the rut, we call it ²úù¾±°ù¾±³¦³ó; chanainn fhèin – tarbh: I would say – a bull.

Puing-chànain na Litreach

Puing-chànain na Litreach: Cha bhi luchag a’ dèanamh ³¦°ùò²Ô²¹²Ô fhad ʼs as aithne dhomh. A mouse doesn’t purr, as far as I know. You will also hear cho fad ʼs as aithne dhomh. It’s a really useful phrase and can be applied in almost any situation, even if words like fios and eòlas (rather than aithne) are being used for ‘knowledge’ in the conversation. ʼS ann aigesan a bhios fios, fhad ʼs as aithne dhomh ‘he will know, as far as I am aware’.

Seanfhaclan na Litreach

Seanfhaclan na Litreach: ʼS ann air a shon fhèin a nì an cat ³¦°ùò²Ô²¹²Ô it’s for itself the cat purrs. Nuair a bhios nì aig a’ chat, nì e »åù°ù»å²¹²Ô when the cat has got hold of something, it purrs.
