August is normally a month that offers a slower pace of life, but the realities of these past few months mean that best laid plans may have changed. For many of us the disruption to our lives is unprecedented. Yet it’s reassuring perhaps to realise that the human race has faced trials and tribulations before. There’s plenty of untold mayhem in the Old Testament of the Bible. In this service we focus on the wholesale destruction and subsequent rebuilding of the city of Jerusalem during the 6th Century BC. Robert Beamish considers what lessons we can learn from that time. Readings include part of the beautiful Book of Lamentations in which the poet bewails the sacking of the temple and the loss of their previous way of life.
Hymns include ‘Praise to the Lord the Almighty, the King of Creation’, ‘Lord of all hopefulness’ and ‘Turn your eyes upon Jesus’.
