Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Muneera Pilgrim, cultural producer:
In 2012 I decided I wanted to experience Islam in Africa. With no Arabic and no knowledge of local tribal languages, I sent an application to a volunteer program and was successful. Less than a month later I was living in Khartoum in Sudan. I had to hustle hard and learn on my feet. In an attempt to be understood I spent the next few weeks playing charades and throwing round the odd Arabic word.
A task like going to the shop became a strenuous half-day event for me. On one such occasion, a woman in the shop watched intently to what was happening between the shopkeeper and I. The sun was extra hot I had no water, and he had little patience. We became exasperated with each other and ended up in a shouting match, I could not understand him, and I doubt he could understand me.
By the hand, the woman watching led me out of the shop and sat me down at the stand where she was selling tea. She was a sita chai, a tea lady from across the road. Communication was not the easiest, but we managed. We talked for hours, about poetry and compared stories of growing up in our families. A few hours later she put her hand on my cheek and said are you okay now. What I initially thought was a conversation was really her sacrificing her day and her income to ensure that I was alright. I asked her, her name and she said Khadijah.
When I thanked Khadijah the sita chai, she responded by saying, I will soothe you and heal you, I will bring you roses. I too have been covered with thorns I recognised it almost straight away, it was a quote by Julaudine Rumi 14th century Poet. It reminded me of the importance of being patient and having compassion with everyone because you never know when someone is having a bad day, but I also felt blessed that even through my thorns and frustrations she was still able to see me like a rose.
