Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

It was really exciting to return to our synagogue after 16 weeks of lockdown.ÌýÌýWhen the first Saturday morning arrived, we prayed outdoors in fine weather and it went surprisingly well.ÌýÌýIt was a pleasure to be back together again, even if we can’t yet restart our little reception and tipple at the end.

Ìý

I hadn’t previously thought much about what connects people.ÌýÌýBut I’ve now discovered it can be very difficult to read someone or even recognise them when it isn’t possible to see their face.ÌýÌýÌýI recall that a few weeks into lockdown, I was walking near my home, when a man on a bike greeted me warmly.ÌýÌýI had no idea who he was.ÌýÌýIt was only when he lowered his mask that I realised he was a colleague, someone I’ve known for many years.ÌýÌýAnd I’ve found it’s remarkably difficult to keep my distance from others during conversations.

Ìý

Back to my synagogue, I’ve also realised how integral community participation is to the whole experience.ÌýÌýMore than distancing, more even than face-coverings, the lack of singing – important as it is to keep us safe – has transformed the synagogue into theatre.ÌýÌýWe’ve moved from sing-along to watch-along – the guy in the centre sings and everyone else looks on or quietly mumbles the words.ÌýÌýNow I know this is temporary, but it feels really odd not to join in.

Ìý

This reminds me of an ancient Jewish teaching about the Genesis story.ÌýÌýGod brought the first human being to life with what’s called ‘koach memalalah’ – the power of speech.ÌýÌýThis means that speech is how we express the connection between our physical and spiritual components, as well as between ourselves and others.ÌýÌýSinging, especially when we do it communally, is even stronger.ÌýÌýIt heightens the sense of connection within ourselves and with others in profound ways.

Ìý

We may not be able to come together as usual at the moment, but I believe that each of us can rediscover the value and connective power of simple phone calls, letters, small gatherings, family-only meals and walks with friends or colleagues.ÌýÌýThere may be no singing for a while longer and I can’t wait for it to be possible again, but for now, there’s a real opportunity to connect with others in old-new ways that I hope will stay with us for a long time.
