Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Dave Tomlinson, writer and vicar at large:
I grew up in a part of Liverpool where I thought the only birds that existed in the world were house sparrows 鈥 nothing against them, by the way鈥heerful chappies who love hanging out with us. But I鈥檒l never forget the first time I saw a goldfinch just outside the city centre in Woolton Woods. I was about 11 with a newfound ambition to be an ornithologist after watching a bird programme on our black and white TV. The exotic little goldfinch with its yellow wings and red face charmed the socks off me. All day, I felt like I鈥檇 stumbled on a fortune and wasn鈥檛 sure whether to tell anyone. Last week, something similar happened. My wife and I were doing our usual lap around a nearby small lake when I heard (amid all the other bird song) a twittering call like the sound of a vocalist in an experimental jazz band 鈥 sublime but all over the place!听
And looking up, I saw on a wire two small birds; they were linnets - one with a handsome red chest 鈥 the lead jazz singer I鈥檝e spotted a lot of birds in my life, but never a shy linnet. In Edwardian times they were a popular cage bird, made famous in the music hall song 鈥楳y old man鈥 about a family doing a midnight runner to avoid paying the rent, the wife following behind 鈥榳iv me old cock linnet.鈥 However, I鈥檇 much rather see birds in the wild like we did last week, feeling like a million dollars for the privilege. I love the random blessings that life sometimes bestows 鈥 moments of grace in the midst of drab ordinariness鈥ostly little things that lift the spirits and put a smile on your face. On Saturday we ventured out for a barbie with friends and as the sun set, their six-year-old named Lowri started dancing unselfconsciously to 鈥楤ack to Life鈥 鈥 another simple, unexpected moment when time stood still, and I felt glad to be alive.听
Someone said that humour is hope seen once more. I feel the same about these commonplace epiphanies which remind me not to pine for another time or place but live now鈥 be open to the seemingly random blessings life constantly affords鈥 鈥eep an ear for that experimental jazz band playing.
