Rock Pools, Alien Plants and Hares

Join Mark Stephen and Euan McIlwraith for the latest outdoor activities from Shetland to the Borders, plus the key stories for those who live and work in the countryside.

Mark and Helen met legendary skier and climber Myrtle Simpson. A few days ago, Myrtle celebrated her 90th birthday so to mark that we look back on a wee clip from our interview.

Mark has been spending time on the riverbank. But what is the strange alien-like plant that he’s come across? All will be revealed as we also chat to an expert about his findings.

Euan delves into the folklore and traditions involving the hare.

Earlier this week Mark headed down to the beach to try his hand at rock pooling and see what he could spot. He had a particular desire to find some Zooplankton. And to tell us all about Zooplankton and what else you might find in a rock pool over the summer, we’re joined live on the line by Chris Rickard from Macduff Aquarium.

Our daily walk this week comes from musician Anna Massie. A regular on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Scotland’s Travelling Folk, Anna takes us on a walk on the Black Isle where she’s spent lockdown with her parents.

Our archive piece this week comes from our forestry special marking 100 years of the Forestry Commission from December last year. Euan chatted to brothers Charlie and Gordon Smith who spent their lives and careers in forestry.

All this week The Woodland Trust has been looking for help to name three osprey chicks that have become an international hit. We’re joined live on the line by George Anderson from The Woodland Trust who can tell us more about the now famous trio who are in a nest at Loch Arkaig Pine Forest in Lochaber

And mystery bird is back! Euan has another interesting call for us to try and identify.
