Clare Balding continues her delve into the Wimbledon archive and introduces classic finals involving two great champions in Serena Williams and Pete Sampras.

As a four-time singles champion at the All England Club by 2012, Williams is no stranger to Wimbledon success, but reaching the final has added significance because it is the first time she has done so since returning from serious illness and injury. Can she hold her nerve for a fifth title or will the talented former junior champion Agnieszka Radwanska utilise her skilful grasscourt game to deny the American?

Pete Sampras dominated Wimbledon in the 1990s, winning the men’s title six times in the last seven years of that decade. In 2000, he is chasing not just another gold trophy but a piece of history, because victory would mean a 13th Grand Slam title, breaking Roy Emerson’s long-standing record. In the final, Sampras is up against the gifted Pat Rafter, who has his sights set on becoming Australia’s first Wimbledon singles champion since 1987.
