Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From comedian & writer Paul Kerensa:聽
I鈥檝e never been an outdoorsy person 鈥 I like being inside, under the duvet (like I am now, although my excuse is, it鈥檚 good for the acoustics). But one of the most useful presents I ever got: was a good coat. Now more than ever, I appreciate chances to go outside. Whatever the 鈥渟ummer鈥 weather 鈥 this week I鈥檝e had sun, rain and wind 鈥 my trusty coat makes sure nothing stops me venturing out for that dog walk, or potter in the garden. Unseasonal conditions might surprise us, but I guess we can layer up. The past few months have surprised us 鈥 globally. We鈥檝e had to put on an extra layer or two, of courage. A resilient exterior, just to leave the house 鈥 let alone any actual protective clothing. It鈥檚 not been easy. Going to the shops has sometimes felt to me like braving the Wild West. What used to be simple can now bring added anxiety.聽
Sometimes I鈥檝e felt on edge just buying a tin of beans. I come home, relieved, shedding those tougher outer layers, thinking: 鈥淧hew! I鈥檝e been to the shops...鈥 I can drop my guard, and be myself again. In the Bible, St Paul wrote a letter of encouragement to the Ephesians, new Christians who held churches at home, rather like now. Paul said, 鈥減ut on the full armour of God: the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, feet with the readiness of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, the sword of the spirit.鈥 Beneath it all, we may still be our anxious human selves. But whether we wear St Paul鈥檚 鈥榓rmour of God鈥, or the courage to step outside and face an uncertain world, those layers we put on, might help us move forward.聽
So I applaud all who wear masks, who wear PPE... but also here鈥檚 a socially-distanced pat on the back, to any who are finding this world a tough one to face, and yet they face it each day. When we don鈥檛 feel courageous, when we feel scared, may we find extra layers of reassurance and boldness, even if we have to rummage around in our mental wardrobes a bit. And if the weather gets properly stormy, I鈥檝e always got my good coat. At least, till the comfort of home again.
