A chance encounter with a peasant family, the MacIlveens, fleeing persecution at the hands of a greedy landlord changes his destiny. Neil defends the family from a murderous reiver, Lachie Dubh then joins them as they journey across the narrow sea to Ulster, to begin a new life in a new land.
