Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Sarah Joseph, Editor of a Muslim lifestyle magazine:聽
Laughingly, my Husband and I always say that we are in an interfaith marriage. We鈥檙e both Muslims, but he supports Liverpool and I support Tottenham Hotspurs! We鈥檝e never fought over it, but we have had to negotiate our different allegiances. Our children are all Liverpool supporters. Our son was captivated by Liverpool at a young age when he watched the 2005 Champions League final. Liverpool had come back from three goals down to beat AC Milan on penalties. His love of Liverpool Football Club was sealed that night. Now, Liverpool winning always gives him and his dad such joy that I often find myself cheering them on as well.聽
There have been so many major moments but the Champions League Final 2018 was a big event when Liverpool lost and I felt such an injustice. The next year鈥檚 final however was complicated鈥 Liverpool had beaten Barcelona in the semis with a Trent Alexander Arnold corner and Origi last minute goal that was so exciting my throat took days to recover from the screams. Then Spurs beat Ajax in the other Semi鈥 Uh oh! I can still remember Final Day. Husband, Son, and both Daughters were sat in the living room in their Liverpool shirts鈥 and I was in a blue dress鈥 I felt sad. I didn鈥檛 feel a part of them. I wanted Liverpool to win for them, and to make up for the year before. I wanted Spurs to win too! Liverpool went on to win the Champions League that night, and now they have just won the Premier League.聽
The First time in thirty years, amidst the backdrop of Lockdown. Real joy permeates our home! In the strange nature of Lockdown 鈥 we have had some weird conversations鈥 one of them went like this: 鈥淲hat if the grandchildren support Liverpool, I鈥檒l feel cut off from that part of them.鈥 Which led to a further discussion on what if the children marry non-Liverpool supporters, or worse 鈥 ardent supporters of another team! Now, this may all sound like mere folly 鈥 especially for those who don鈥檛 follow a team鈥 But for me, it speaks to a sense of belonging, of community. The Qur鈥檃n describes how human beings have been created into different nations and tribes so that we can know one another. For sure, differences have to be navigated 鈥 but it can be done.聽 I mean--we鈥檝e been married for over 27 years even despite our different football allegiances!
