Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
Writer and Musician, Jahnavi Harrison:Μύ
I was coming home from a walk with my Mum yesterday and one of our neighbours was out in her front garden. We said hello and how are you – the kind of warm greeting where you really mean it sincerely but keep walking to signal – β€œI wish you well but I don’t have time for a long chat” But we did slow down a little bit, as you do, and our neighbour walked closer as well, β€œDo you know,” she said, β€œThis is the first conversation I’m having with a human being this whole week.” I suddenly saw all the times in the last few days, I’d just walked past without a word, as she tended to her front garden.Μύ
Her vulnerable confession changed the tone immediately. I realised that though this was β€˜just pleasantries,’ it was also a lifeline. She explained that her daughter had moved out ten days ago, and now for the first time, the house was completely empty but for the cats. We must have talked for no more than ten minutes, but by the end of it she was offering us some beetroot plants and my mum was inviting her round for tea in the garden. She brought the plants to our doorstep later and I knew that giving them probably warmed her heart as much as ours in receiving them.Μύ
The past months have brought into sharper relief than ever, the power of simple caring connections. The saint, Rupa Goswami wrote of the six exchanges of love, which go in pairs actually – Giving gifts, and receiving gifts; sharing one’s heart and mind, and listening to another’s heart and mind in confidence; and probably my favourite one – giving food made with love, and receiving it. I never ceased to be amazed at how just a tiny amount of any of these six things fosters a sense of connection and care immediately. So I just want to say thank you today – to the little girls with a basket of handpainted pebbles that came round our street, depositing one outside every house; for the friends who braved Zoom reading groups with children running riot in the background; for impromptu homemade things brought to our door… I pray to never forget how much these gestures mean, and to keep paying them forward.
