Pause For Thought
One of my favourite sayings is the African proverb: ‘It takes a village to raise a child. I love the premise that an entire community of people can interact with children in order for them to experience and grow in a safe and healthy environment. By community, I mean parents, siblings, neighbours, teachers, government, police, youth services, all of these different groups coming together and saying, ‘OK, what I can I do to improve the possibility of this child reaching their full potential?’ I was blessed with having people like that in my childhood, revealing to me my purpose in life.Â
If I had not been told that I was a gifted writer in school or had Hafis, my youth leader encourage me to rap, my life could have taken a completely different path. I went to church growing up as my family encouraged me to, but I was never really engaged or interested. They had a really good youth club though so that swung it for me, and a great leader in Hafis. To be honest, if I’d been given a selection of youth leaders and told to choose one, it is unlikely I would have picked him. He was quite a lot older than me and he didn’t wear fashionable tracksuits or trainers, which were quite important to me at the time. In fact, he wasn’t cool at all. Even still, that man had a big impact on my life and the reason for that is because he cared about me.Â
The word relatable is often used in reference to role models but for me I didn’t need a youth leader that I had loads in common with, or that was cool. I just needed someone who cared. I’d love to take this moment to thank anyone who has ever cared for me. From the owner of the local corner shop asking me how my day’s going right down to train driver that saw me doing my best Usain Bolt impression and decided to leave the doors open for a few seconds longer. My faith as a Christian means that love and care has got to be high up on the agenda for me, so I’m looking forward to giving as much care as I’ve received over the years.
