A Tree Special

Join Mark Stephen and Euan McIlwraith for the latest outdoor activities from Shetland to the Borders, plus the key stories for those who live and work in the countryside.

This week’s Out of Doors is all about trees.

Euan delves into the archive and remembers a visit he made in 2018 to one of the most impressive trees in Perthshire.

Trees for Life is a conservation charity dedicated to rewilding the Scottish Highlands. At the moment a team of six is isolating at the charity’s Dundreggan Estate near Fort Augustus to continue their work with trees. We catch up with their operations manager, Doug Gilbert to find out how they are getting on.

With quieter streets and roads due to lockdown, wildlife is reclaiming parts of the country it hasn’t ventured to in a while. In particular lots of people have seen roe deer wandering around. Mark tells us all about this usually secretive species.

Euan takes a look around his garden and tells us about why he loves trees and describes his favourites.

Fi Martynoga is an environmental activist, journalist and researcher with a lifelong love of trees. She joins us down the line to tell us about why trees are so important and how we can learn more about them.

Our Edinburgh colleague, producer Debbie McPhail takes us on a walk round Edinburgh past some of her favourite trees, lilacs.

The Woodland Trust’s Tree of the Year competition is open for nominations. Over the years there have been some memorable contestants and winners. Jill Donnachie from the Trust joins us down the line to remind us about some of them plus she tells us how to get involved in this year’s competition.

Next it’s Mark’s turn to reveal his favourite tree and also bring us some tree facts.

Once again Euan brings us a mystery bird. This week’s is an elusive bird that you may well have heard many times, but rarely see.

And a couple of years ago we spent some time in a wood near Scone having a go at Shinrin Yoku or Forest Bathing with guide Caitlin Keddie. We hear a clip of that trip to inspire us to spend some mindful time among trees.
