Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Tom Cozens, a presenter and director.Β
On a family run two weeks ago, it was a gorgeous sunny day, and we entered a bluebell forest over a stile, helping James, my brother, lift his unicycle over it. James, (who has only recently taken up unicycling) then peddled along beside the running party. Passers by looked at James in bewilderment, making me want to blurt out: β€œI’m not with him”, but held my tongue so as not to hurt his feelings.Β Β
Of course I’ve now said this on national radio, but his sleep schedule means he won’t be awake for another 5 hours, so if we can just keep that between us guys that would be great. But not even my brother unicycling around, like some sort of forest clown could spoil this moment of bliss. The sun was setting through the trees, with dappled light igniting the bluebells into a glorious array of blues and purples. We ran (and unicycled) in silent appreciation. On the Monday just gone, I wanted to see the scene again and so made the same journey, this time alone. It was cold and drizzly, a tree had fallen down over the stile, and walking into the forest it was clear to see that the scene had lost its colour.Β  Just like that, the bluebell flowers had gone.Β
As I ran looking for some trace of blue, I felt a real loss. In the bible it talks about how things in life can be like flowers which are beautiful in their time, but will always end up withering. Things in this world are not permanent, however much we might want them to be. Perhaps they’re beautiful because they’re temporary. But I think that’s only half the beauty of a bluebell. In the bible it also talks about how God has put eternity in our hearts. When I see something beautiful it doesn’t just tell me that things are temporary, it reminds me that I want something permanent. That perhaps, the fleeting beauties we see in this life reflect a greater beauty that will last forever. And maybe James’ unicycling is just a phase, or perhaps he’ll be unicycling with me through bluebell forests for years to come, making my life that little bit more embarrassing.
