Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From the Reverend Kate Bottley:

Being a mere 5 foot and ΒΎ inch in my stocking-ed feet - that’s shorter than Kylie, by the way - I struggle to reach the very top shelf of our kitchen cupboard. So, I regularly have to employ what’s known as the β€˜wooden spoon’ technique. This involves standing on my absolute tiptoes and using a wooden spoon to hook the desired item from the top shelf, then quickly, in one swift movement, catching whatever it is in both hands. Most of the time it’s fine, but just occasionally I miss my catch or worse still take a tin of beans to the head. It’s happened and more than once. I also have been known to scale supermarket shelves for cheese.Β Β

But whenever my height is a disadvantage, I try to remember that when I was even smaller than I am now, my dad would tell me that nice things come in little packages, β€˜There’s big lumps of coal, our Katie, and then there’s tiny diamonds.’

And it’s true something very small can be worth a great deal. This week alone I’ve found left on my doorstep a card of encouragement from a friend, a bar of my favourite chocolate and a much needed 7 gram sachet of yeast so I could have some baking therapy.

Jesus knew about small not being insignificant when he told a story about the power of a mustard seed. A tiny speck, when planted, nurtured and grown, can provide a tree so big, all the birds of the air can nest in it. And there is a quote attributed to the Dalai Lama that goes β€˜If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping in a room with a mosquito.’

Tiny can be powerful. This week a lovely older gentleman went for a little stroll around his garden and look at the difference he made. So I’m going to look for the little diamonds, the small acts and tiny gestures that make a big difference, not just the ones I receive but also the ones I send out into the world. Having said that though, to save myself from any more lumps on my head I might just invest in a little stepladder to reach those beans. Or wear a crash helmet.
