Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice
Gluck's setting of the myth of the musician, Orpheus. Star mezzo Jamie Barton leads in the role of Orpheus with soprano Hei-Kyung Hong as Euridice.
This evening's opera is a performance of Gluck's setting of the myth of the musician, Orpheus, who has been allowed by the gods to travels to the Underworld to bring back his dead wife, Euridice, on one condition - that he doesn't look at her. In this work, Gluck created a new form of opera, completely integrating music, poetry and dance.
Mark Wigglesworth conducts Gluck's elegant score, and a cast led by star mezzo Jamie Barton as Orpheus, soprano Hei-Kyung Hong as Euridice and Hera Hyesang Park as Amore.
This performance from the Met in New York was recorded last autumn and is presented by Mary Jo Heath with commentator Ira Siff.
