Pause For Thought
From Laura Marks, a campaigner for social action and interfaith relationships.
My hectic Jewish life revolves around, is obsessed with and reveres, gatherings. Whether I’m cramming my extended family full of chicken soup on Friday night, catching up with the community gossip after services, dancing at a family wedding or this week, preparing for the start of the festival of Passover, it’s all about coming together.Â
Now at home, step count at a record low and biscuit consumption at a record high, I’ve had to reassess. Getting used to life at a distance…
My baby niece Leia, now knows me as the crazy woman, shaking a tambourine and gesticulating wildly onto her mum’s phone screen. My daily walk with the dog has been re-routed to pass my parents flat – allowing Basel to wag hello with his tail – albeit from three floors down. And standing outside our house joining the clamour of freshly washed hands clapping for the NHS staff made me realise that we used not to have a street messaging system. Now we do.Â
With the synagogue closed, I logged in on video conferencing on Friday night to see over 200 screens of people following the service. I saw right into people’s homes (I tidied mine up first) catching a glimpse of people lighting their shabbat candles, the warm glow shining straight from their house to ours.
Wisely the rabbi, standing on his own, had all of us on mute but down the side, people were posting messages of love, friendship, and support. Hello, Shabbat shalom – We’re here for you
Rabbi Jonathan Sacks described our situation as a form of revelation. He spoke about a bond of human solidarity, the thing that makes each of us not only an ‘I’, but part of the greater collective, ‘we’.Â
So, this year, rather than spending hours sweating over the stove, I’ve been planning an on-line version of the traditional Passover seder where everyone, even my nephew in Melbourne, can take a seat.
Whilst it is tragic to be reduced to a 3cm picture flickering on a screen, we will all be welcomed with our traditional matzah, boiled egg and always rather disappointing Passover pudding, from our hopefully tidied up living rooms.Â
This year, apart does not mean we can’t be together.
