Pause For Thought
From comedian & writer Paul Kerensa:
For our kids, we used to use the Time Out Step, aka the Naughty step. The bottom step of the stairs 鈥 there when they need a few moments.
It was time-relative. You were on the step for as many years as you were minutes alive. Or maybe the other way round (whichever buys you longer). So when my daughter was 3, she was on there for 3 minutes. When my son was 5, he was on there for 5 minutes. I started deliberately misbehaving at 41, hoping to get a sitdown for 41 minutes. I thought I could read a book and everything. But no...
I鈥檝e realised that, although we don鈥檛 do the Time Out Step nowadays, I do still tell my children when to sit. To stop. To take a moment of calm. The step lives on: it鈥檚 just moved, to this chair, that sofa, this beanbag, that deckchair (after a chaotic moment in the garden).
But as a 41-year-old, people don鈥檛 tell me to sit and stop. We tell the children, or the dog, but no one tells the adults. Well, my wife does, if I鈥檓 pottering about too much. 鈥淛ust sit down!鈥 鈥淏ut I want to hel-...鈥 鈥淪it!鈥
Jesus said: 鈥楥ome to me, if you鈥檙e weary and burdened, and I鈥檒l give you rest.鈥 鈥榊ou鈥檒l find rest for your souls,鈥 he went on. 鈥楩or my yoke is easy and my burden light.鈥
For years, I thought that 鈥榶oke鈥 was to do with eggs. Different sort of yoke. The yoke, it turns out, is the harness that two oxen or cattle might wear, to pull a plough. I get it now. If your partner鈥檚 got a light load 鈥 if their burden is easy 鈥 yours will be too. Basically, yoke鈥檚 on them.
It鈥檚 not easy, but I鈥檓 trying to offload my woes, not be burdened, instead partnering with one who鈥檒l help take the weight (I鈥檝e gone for Jesus, but other belief systems are available). Whatever our faith 鈥 or lack-of, sometimes I think we need to be told to rest. Perhaps grown-ups need a Time-Out step, as well as the kids. And maybe 鈥楥ome to me, weary and burdened, I鈥檒l give you rest...鈥 鈥 is another way of saying: 鈥楽it. Stop. Time out.鈥
