Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Laura Marks, a campaigner for social action and interfaith relationships.

This Saturday is special.  Not another festival, but my nephew Matthews’ birthday.  Whilst he looks every bit of 28 and is qualified as a doctor, it’s actually only his 7th birthday because Matthew was born on the leap year day in 1992.

When Matthew arrived, he was a gift, a blessing and of course, our pride and joy.

So imagine the dismay, as he grew older, when he realised that we only have the 29th February every 4 years.  Whilst his parents ensured we celebrated with appropriate gifts, a chocolate caterpillar cake and Matthew being given the right number of bumps, he felt just a bit cheated out of an annual birthday by the vagaries of the Gregorian calendar, with its four yearly extra day.

The Jewish year is even more complicated.  We don’t insert a leap year day but, and for reasons I don’t fully understand, we repeat a whole month 7 times in a 19 year cycle.

I couldn’t bear repeating the month of February.  Whilst it has its upsides, mainly that it’s not January, I’m no fan of short dark days.  This year’s torrential rain in particular, flooding homes, isolating the vulnerable, and bringing wretchedness in its tracks, has made me yearn for the spring days of March.

Luckily the month we repeat in the Jewish calendar is not a British February, though it’s around the same time, but the month of Adar, which is the month specifically of Joy.

Joy, according to Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, lives in the moment, it discovers you. It has to do with a sense of connection. It is a social emotion.

So, having waited for forty-eight months since Matthew’s last proper birthday, on our one leap year day, Saturday 29th of February, this paltry extra 24 hours, this 1440 minutes, this time that next year, not a leap year, won’t even exist, our family is connecting, joyfully over piles of homemade food.

For, whether its once every four years, once a year or every single day, Matthew knows deep down, that joy lurks in connections, social emotions and ties with family and friends, as well as in the 28 bumps, and not in the calendar itself.  2020 is one small step for Matthew but one giant leap year for mankind.
