Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Dave Tomlinson, writer and vicar at large:

Our friends Aimie and Rob have two children, Art, aged 8 and Lowri, 5. A couple of weeks ago, they were drawing together. Lowri went to town with her picture: there were rainbows, magical creatures, unicorns, her friends, loads of animals, and Dash the family dog – all living in a big house.

When her brother saw it, he exclaimed, ‘Lowri, you’re so cute.’ To which she shrieked, ‘Who’s calling me cute? I’m not cute; I’m WILD!’

Precisely what being ‘wild’ will mean for her parents in the future is anyone’s guess. She is definitely a young woman who knows her mind. But I love the idea of a 5-year-old having at least some sense that her life doesn’t have to conform to other people’s expectations.

According to one palliative nurse, the most common regret of the people in their care is not having mustered the courage to follow their dreams: to live a life true to themselves. And I guess most of us are familiar with the pressures that cause this to be so – the sense of duty to do things we would not choose to, the need to focus on work and simply surviving, the pressure of what other people think.

Yet I am haunted by the line from a poem by David Whyte that says, ‘Inside everyone is a great shout of joy waiting to be born.’ I think this is the wildness within which I never want to lose touch with – the sense of who I really am and long to be, and not what I feel I am supposed to be. I don’t want to be so caught up with conforming or trying to get things ‘right’ that I neglect the joy in being.

A three- year-old little girl in my last church coloured a picture for me as a present. She completely missed the outlines and crayoned all over the place. On one level, the picture was all wrong, yet on another, it was wild and perfect, and I loved it.

Without doubt, Lowri and this three-year-old are among my best spiritual guides because they remind me that life isn’t about trying to live within the lines; it is about the joy of colouring!
