Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Muneera Pilgrim, cultural producer:

In Arabic, fitnah means trial. If someone is going through a hard time, it is said that they are going through a fitnah.听

Recently I went through an internal fitnah.

I am a poet, a writer and a culture producer, I came up with this title when trying to explain to my parents exactly what it is that I do. 鈥淚 write and I discuss trends within culture and politics, but the question I鈥檝e heard throughout my adult life is听 鈥渨hen yuh ah go get a real job?鈥澨

I have become used to defending myself, and the reason why I don鈥檛 have 9-5 and why it is difficult to say exactly how much money I make month to month. In the past, I felt like I was being childish and trying to fulfill some elaborate dream.听 I鈥檝e felt like an imposter and like I don鈥檛 deserve to be doing this kind of work, because no one in my family has done this before me. Now, rarely do I invest in these thoughts. Or at least I didn鈥檛 think I did until late last year when I was commissioned to do a poem and a talk.

Presenting for this platform had been on my to-do list for 5 years. I had been preparing by practicing in front of mirrors for 5 years.

Though I had my words ready, no amount of practice would make the words string together, at each rehearsal I stumbled.

Come the final rehearsal, Mel, the organiser, tried to reassure me though today was not good, tomorrow would be better.

Tomorrow came, I听approached the red carpet thinking 鈥業鈥檓 gonna fail.鈥

The worst happened. In the 5th line I stumbled, and again in the 6th, but by the 10th,听confidence! Like I鈥檝e never felt, rose from my belly and made it鈥檚 home in my mouth. I delivered better than I had dreamed. Just 5 lines after failure, a complete transformation from fear to liquid gold.听

Fitna does mean trial, but it also means alchemy. African American Muslim jazz听icon John Coltrane said:听

鈥淭here is never an end. There are always new sounds to imagine; new feelings to get at鈥 always there is a need to keep on鈥澨

I thought I was walking into fitna, not realising a great transformation听was waiting to happen. And all I had to do was keep on.
