Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From comedian & writer Paul Kerensa:

During a steak and beer this week, I realised I’d not done well at Veganuary, or Dry January. I’ve not fully committed to either, but like many, I’ve cut back. Half-hearted, but at least, my glass is half-full.

As February comes, I’m sure many who’ve gone vegan or dry this month, might go back tomorrow. But I wonder, if we’ve made a healthy turn this year, maybe we continue down that road.

This January I’ve tried topping up my spiritual health. I’m reading the Bible in a year, in order – only about seven minutes a day. So far I’ve done Genesis – arks and dreamcoats – I’m onto Moses. No spoilers of where it goes from here... I’ve glanced ahead, that Judas bloke looks shifty, but I reckon it’ll work alright in the end. Who knows if I’ll keep it up, but I’m aiming for Revelation by Christmas.

But are January changes of discipline, diet and lifestyle, just for starters? Personally I don’t do many New Year’s Resolutions – I prefer my decisions to improve not as annual reminders, like an MOT. (Yes I’m using car terminology because Paddy’s in.) With February, how about a New Month Resolution?

Because new beginnings can take longer than January allows. For example, here’s weirdness... I was a writer on Top Gear a couple of series ago, the first one post-JC. So yes: New beginnings can be tricky! Ironically for ‘Veganuary’: Paddy and I both gained work because a steak never arrived (you may recall undelivered dinner prompted that gear change).

For all of us, forward movement and change of direction can take time – and the road ahead’s unknown. But whether this year we’ve stopped beef or booze, or started books, Bibles, or Beckett comedy tours... I name this month ‘Beganuary’. When things we’ve began.. begun... are only the start. Hold our nerve, through Febru-scary, March through April, maybe June, July, August. Sept-remember to not get blocked-over people say No-no-november, just dig deep-cember. The year, our lives, need countless new resolutions.

Tomorrow’s always a new beginning – today’s tomorrow especially so. We’re a work-in-progress, and progressing takes work. If January’s the ignition, February, we get in gear.
