Philadelphia

Episode 2 of 6

Joe Lindsay and Jennifer Reoch explore Philadelphia, aka The City of Brotherly Love. And actor Atta Yaqub takes a short getaway in Perthshire.

Joe Lindsay is joined by new Getaways presenter Jennifer Reoch and they are in the USA, reporting from Philadelphia, aka The City of Brotherly Love.

The show is driven by viewer recommendations, which include seeing Philly from the One Liberty Observation Deck. Other popular suggestions include recreating the famous movie run up the Rocky Steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and finding the love at Love Park, with its iconic sculpture.

In a city of huge historical importance to the USA, essential stop-offs include the Liberty Bell, one of the most important symbols of American independence and freedom, the National Constitution Center and the Franklin National Memorial, where Joe pays homage to one of the founding fathers of the United States.

Despite all that history, one of the city’s biggest tourist draws is the Reading Terminal Market, one of the largest and oldest markets in the US, where Jennifer finds international flavours are the order of the day. Meanwhile, Joe stays closer to home with a Philly cheesesteak, never to be described as a local delicacy.

Jennifer explores the Magic Gardens, where trash becomes art, and pops into the Fairmount Park to see the treehouse-like Pavilion in the Trees. Joe spends time at the Eastern State Penitentiary, where Al Capone was once held in style and, chillingly, where the solitary-confinement system was developed and prisoners were duly penitent.

They also find the oldest residential street in America, a pop-up beach with its own boardwalk, and take in the city lights from the Delaware River.

In this week’s short getaway, actor Atta Yaqub discovers some of the best of Perthshire, including Scone Palace, the original home of the Stone of Destiny.
