06/01/20 - Mobile abattoirs, farm investment and LAMMA 2020.
We hear what visitors can expect at LAMMA 2020.
Birmingham is the place to be this week for anyone interested in tractors, sprayers or farming tech. The annual LAMMA show at the NEC, promises 11 exhibition halls full of the latest farming machinery. We hear what visitors can expect, and speak to the Head of Agriculture at Barclays Bank about whether farmers are feeling confident enough to invest in new toys.
In the past decade the sustainable food trust reckons more than a third have closed down - meaning longer journeys from farm to slaughter for many animals. It says it's a result of regulations, economics and the retail food chain. So where local abattoirs have closed, could mobile abattoirs be the answer? The basic idea is to take a fully equipped abattoir on a trailer from farm to farm to slaughter animals without them travelling anywhere. We catch up with a scheme being set up in Gloucesteshire, which after 3 years of work, could finally be coming to fruition in the coming months.
