Pause For Thought
Matt Woodcock, Church of England Pioneer Minister and Mission Supporter in the Diocese of York:
I have mixed feelings about Boxing Day. There is lots for me to feel happy and relieved about. Like not being shaken by our twin daughters at 5.30am demanding their chocolate Advent Calendars, no more worries about small children setting me on fire at a Carols by candlelight, and an end to simmering tensions with my wife about the whereabouts of the scissors and sellotape.
Yet I still can’t help feeling a sense of anti-climax after yesterday’s festive crescendo. All that build up and anticipation gone in a puff of unpleasant turkey whiffs - or was that just in our front room?
The poet Sylvia Plath once described Boxing Day as a day to feel ‘d¾±²õ²¹±è±è´Ç¾±²Ô³Ù±ð»å’ and ‘o±¹±ð°ù²õ³Ù³Ü´Ú´Ú±ð»å’. I know what she means. My body has once again suffered the consequences of epic overindulging. That fifth ‘pig in blanket’ was entirely unnecessary at my in-laws dinner table; my love handles have turned into love shelves.
At least I have treasured memories to feed on to beat the post-Christmas blues, like my daughter’s face when she unwrapped her new toy Dalmatian – Jessica, the sound of laughter and terrible cracker jokes among the paper-hat wearing pensioners at our community lunch, and the guy so overcome with joy at being invited to his first ever Christmas party that he stormed our stage to dance to Slade. I couldn’t get him off.
I’ve once again seen how this season has the power to motivate people to new levels of kindness and compassion. Marvelled at how the message of the Christmas story - light overcoming darkness - is being lived out in beautiful and practical ways.
Take our local plasterer - Lee.
He’s been inspired to action after meeting a freezing homeless man on his way home from a Christmas do, and mobilised friends and family to go with him early tomorrow to offer out hot drinks, bacon butties and conversation.Â
The challenge of my faith is that I should try to live out the loving, serving example of Jesus throughout the year. Extend the season of peace and goodwill to all humankind - long after the chocolate logs have been eaten and baubles packed away in the loft.
As for the rest of my Boxing Day, it’s yet another party at the in-laws. Pigs in blankets all round.
