Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From the Reverend Kate Bottley:

When I was little I thought a lot about what I wanted to be when I grew up. A singer? I can’t hit a note. An air hostess? Nope, travel sick. A vicar? Don’t be silly. I got my answer one Saturday afternoon watching the telly just before Christmas. That’s when I saw her, that’s when I knew what I wanted to be.

I wanted to be Wonder Woman. Back then Wonder Woman was played by Lynda Carter and she had a sword! A shield! A lasso of truth, indestructible bracelets and a tiara she could chuck at people and do lasting damage. She wore big pants. I was sold.  So as a Christmas present my Mum made me my very own Wonder Woman outfit with tin foil and toilet roll bracelets and big pants to be worn on the outside of my trousers. I ran straight outside to face down my nemesis, AKA next door’s cat, and I felt invincible.

In the Bible, we are told lots of details about what happened in the stable on the very first Christmas, including what the baby wore. No designer gear or superhero outfits here, but home-made Swaddling bands, bits of cloth wrapped snugly around the infant Jesus; a mum making do. The poor little thing didn’t even have a cape, but he did have a mother’s love and a mission to do good, to help and to save.

On Christmas day, there will be some extraordinary people who, while the rest of us are putting on party hats, will get all togged up in their superhero gear - the fire fighters and police officers in their uniforms, the nurses and paramedics in theirs. While what you wear might make you identifiable and afford you some protection, it’s not what makes you super, though. Because like all the best things at Christmas it’s not the wrapping, but what’s inside it that counts. It’s not the uniform but it’s wearer, and their desire to do good that makes the difference, motivated by love to try and make the world a better place.

So, thank you to the heroes, the ones in the studio today and the ones whose names we don’t know. You’re all utterly marvellous but in the middle of your miracle-working missions please do us a favour and try to remember to wear your pants on the inside of your trousers.

Merry Christmas!
