Pause For Thought
From writer and musician, Jahnavi Harrison:
My guru has been in town this week. I know that sounds kind of funny in English. At least, the word 'guru' has so many somewhat negative connotations that make it a word you don't just drop into casual conversation. I often instead say spiritual teacher - but teacher doesn't really cut it as a word... the Sanskrit word guru has so much more meaning.
Β Apart from being a title for a great master, it also means heavy - heavy in weight, heavy in knowledge - like a cloud just bursting. It means a person whose knowledge is applied every day, and whose actions, words and thoughts are all geared toward serving others in understanding the meaning of life.
So my guru has been in town and the other day, listening to him speak great words of wisdom and depth, I felt a familiar relieving wash of something… something that's hard to fake... I don't know, is it a humble-brag to say you felt humble? Maybe.
Β Anyway, In the presence of someone who's pursued a life of uninterrupted service and, love and compassion, inspiring hundreds of thousands all over the world, this feeling came over me which was that nice pinch of exposing my many flaws but at the same time relieving- humbling but not humiliating - and at that moment I remembered the phrase another great teacher of mine coined - 'happy small'.Β
It perfectly sums up the feeling of understanding how small I am, how insignificant, how I don't really know anything, and am bound to keep making so many mistakes...yet how fortunate I am, how much I have to be grateful for, how much I can offer if I tune into the love and kindness I have in my heart and see how I can share it in small ways, always.
Β Humility comes from the Latin humus - which means ground, or earth. The word is still used to describe a particularly rich type of soil. I like that, because it's a reminder that from humility, all good things grow. And it doesn't require a lot of effort actually. In remembering and honouring the greatness of my guru I feel happy small, and I think I'd like to stay that way always.
