Pause For Thought
From comedian & writer Paul Kerensa:
I know this isn鈥檛 a serial, but... Previously on Pause For Thought:
Last Friday we were talking Children In Need, and I mentioned being a kid in children鈥檚 hospital, born with my 鈥渙utie bladder鈥, while I鈥檓 guessing, most of your bladders are innies.
So I was tweeted after, by a woman called Kerry. Her 8-year-old son has the same, pretty rare condition. When rare things come along, it鈥檚 nice to talk about them, because then they become a bit less rare, and you鈥檙e no longer a dot, you鈥檙e part of a line, between two dots.
So this condition鈥檚 called 鈥榖ladder exstrophy鈥 鈥 exstrophy meaning 鈥榦ut of body鈥. We think of out-of-body experiences as the mind, the soul... no one ever thinks of the bladder, the least glamorous body-part. That heart symbol people do with their fingers 鈥 no one ever does the bladder. Just looks like a wobbly oval.
With a nod to Mr Walliams, children鈥檚 hospital was pretty much like The Midnight Gang. And with a nod to Mr Williams, the patients and staff were Kids and Angels.
But I had some close calls. Early brushes with mortality brought big questions, to me on ward 6CD. Does that 鈥榮oul鈥 exist? Is there someone above all this? (I mean, God, not, ward 7CD...) What鈥檚 next, after this life?
And what鈥檚 next, within this life? Because an academic studied what us wonky-bladdered patients grew up to do. A third went into healthcare, and another third went into comedy 鈥 a bizarrely high amount.
I鈥檓 a comedy writer (see Miranda Hart鈥檚 Christmas special for details). My ward-mates became film-makers, comic book artists, a professional clown... three other stand-ups as well as me. Add those working in healthcare 鈥 clearly children鈥檚 hospital alumni are more likely to want to make people healthier or happier.
I guess it鈥檚 about relating to others. I think there鈥檚 a reason that Jesus said 鈥渨hen two or three are gathered in my name, I鈥檓 there too.鈥 Community matters. Perhaps we鈥檙e not made to be dots, but lines becoming shapes. Surely even solo stars like to duet 鈥 or rejoin the group, now and then.
When Kerry got in touch about her son, it reminded me that even the rarest hidden conditions have co-sufferers. Whatever we鈥檙e going through, we鈥檙e not alone. Togetherness, community, music, laughter... Maybe these are the best medicines, apart from the things you get in hospital.
