Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Sarah Joseph, Editor of a Muslim lifestyle magazine:

On the train the other day, a fellow passenger was watching a film on his phone. He was laughing so hard that his body shook. Hand over his mouth, he was trying to contain his laughter from the other passengers, on what was a very busy morning commute.

I wanted the other passengers to laugh along with him, to engage, so that he could feel free to let out the howling laugh he was obviously trying hard to suppress… but no one did. The train carriage was not engaging. Β I, on the other hand, found his laughter infectious, and so I struggled to contain my own desire to burst out laughing… not laughing at him! Β Rather I had caught his merriment…

And so, the pair of us stuffed our cheerfulness into ourselves, on that busy train, although I did think we would have all been a lot happier if we could have somehow laughed together.

For me, I like to laugh… A few things have got me through many of my troubles in life: My faith, my family, tea, and a rather silly sense of humour! Β The fact that my husband can make me laugh, has, I am sure, got us through 27 years of marriage.

I’m laughing with him most of the time, although sometimes I am laughing with him laughing at me...

I don’t mind... I make my fair share of faux pas.

Like the time I asked Britain’s most famous playwright, Tom Stoppard, β€œand what do you do Tom?” To which he replied, β€œI write plays.” In my defence, it didn’t occur to me that the Tom Stoppard I was standing in front of was THE Tom Stoppard.

My husband thinks stories like this are hilarious, and loves to remind me of these moments... and many more!

I reckon, positive vibes are contagious, and I am all for the idea of laughter as medicine.

The Prophet Muhammad is said to have laughed until his back teeth showed, and Sufi tales of the joker – Hodja – have kept generations of Muslims entertained.

If I’m feeling a tad down, I try to think of joyful thoughts. Β Sometimes I’ll even be on the train, chuckling to myself... do feel free to join along with me.
