More about the progamme

Facial recognition technology is on our phones and South Wales Police is trialling it on the streets. And more venues like gyms are using it as a convenience for customers.Β

But what is a service for those who sign up for it, is sinister surveillance for others when they find it looking at them as they go about their routine or their leisure.Β

Civil liberties campaigner Ed Bridges tells Eye on Wales why has brought the first legal challenge against police using it in public places – a case that will now go to the Court of Appeal.

Presenter Oliver Hides meets the police force’s deputy chief constable to hear how the first round of this court fight found officers are using the technology lawfully and proportionately.

And he tests out the Automatic Facial Recognition (AFR) system to see if it can tell when he is in the frame.
