Delia Smith; Knife Sales; Brain Bootcamp

Has 50 years of Delia Smith cookery really changed how we shop and what we eat?

Knife crime in England and Wales has increased again, according to figures from police forces published this week. In the 12 months to the end of June 2019, knife crime offences rose by 7% - a record high. As UK retailers work to stop sales of knives to under 18s, You and Yours can reveal that children are buying knives from foreign online retailers at low prices.

Dr Rahul Jandial is the real medical deal - a working neurosurgeon and scientist at one of the most innovative clinics in the US. Now he has written his first book, with the aim of be-bunking the various myths about the brain. He wants us all to start treating our brains as we do our hearts and advocates a set of research based routines that can help brain performance. He discusses the idea of a brain boot camp with the Allo Allo actor Arthur Bostrom, who is keen to hold back the years.

Fifty years ago this Autumn Delia Smith started out as a rookie cookery writer at the Daily Mirror magazine. Her writing and television programmes went on to become hugely influential and a huge swathe of the UK's home cooks owe a debt to her. But have we really changed what we buy and what we cook because of her? Peter White talks to food historian Polly Russell about that. Did we listen when she warned as early as the 1970s that we should cut down on the amount of meat we eat?

The Office of the Public Guardian, the OPG, is the government department that grants lasting power of attorney - when a person is allowed to make financial decisions on behalf of a vulnerable friend or family member. Many efforts have been made to make power of attorney less complicated and more straightforward to obtain and there are some 4.3million of them in operation. But now the OPG's own figures show a 55% rise in cases where somebody's abused these powers. Peter White asks the newly appointed Public Guardian and chief executive of the OPG, Nick Goodwin, if they are struggling to keep up with the numbers.
